The space
The intervention was minimal. The walls, the joinery and the original layout were kept, and the work started from what was already there rather than rebuilding. Working with what exists, imposing nothing new, is where the project began.
Boucheruit, from boucherouite. Rugs knotted in wool, cotton and salvaged textiles, with no inherited palette and no pattern to follow: colour is decided in the making, according to whatever material is at hand. The composition proceeds without a plan —blocks that collide, interrupted rhythms, a symmetry never sought— and that spontaneity places them close to contemporary abstraction. The space is organised on the same principle.
The hang
The pieces do not cover the floor entirely. They are shown on the floor and on the wall, and the selection rotates. Hung, a rug reads as a pictorial surface: the drawing resolves, the colour gains weight, the composition appears whole. On the floor it becomes an object again, with its scale and its texture. Light and placement alter all three, and seeing them installed allows them to be compared under those conditions.
The pieces
Each Amazigh tribe weaves with its own repertoire of materials, motifs and colour. Pieces from different traditions coexist here —Beni Ouarain, Boujad, Boucherouite, Azilal— both vintage and newly woven. Together, each one defines the others more clearly.
Visit
The space occupies a ground-floor unit in the medieval quarter of Vitoria-Gasteiz, a minute from the Virgen Blanca.
Open to the public. Longer visits, with a selection prepared in advance, can be arranged by appointment.
