description

Large vintage Beni Ourain rug, handwoven in sheep’s wool. Beni Ourain rugs are among the most recognisable textiles woven by the tribes of the Atlas Mountains, known for their thick wool, light backgrounds, and geometric motifs in darker yarns.
This piece retains that essence while presenting a composition that feels more open and less symmetrical than usual. Its pattern is closer to a hand-drawn gesture than to a repeated design, giving the rug a distinctive sense of character and individuality.

The background is an undyed natural wool tone, close to off-white, with the warmth and depth characteristic of natural fibres. Across its surface runs a network of diamonds and irregular lines in dark brown, creating the rug’s underlying structure. Within this framework, small accents of colour — blue, green, orange and pink — appear scattered throughout the composition, seemingly at random yet held together by a balance that is immediately apparent.

The texture is dense and tactile, with a lively, irregular pile that gives the rug a strong physical presence. It is a piece that benefits from space and visibility, working particularly well in living or dining areas where it can be appreciated in its entirety and serve as the central element around which the rest of the interior is arranged.

As a handwoven vintage piece, it may display variations in the pattern, irregularities in the weave, or small signs of age and use. These are not imperfections but part of what defines the rug: a textile work with history, character, and a life of its own.
