Rehamna

Rehamna is the name of a tribe and of a land: the dry plains north of Marrakech, between the Haouz and Ben Guerir. Unlike almost every tradition gathered here, its roots are Arab rather than Amazigh. The Rehamna reached Morocco after a long migration and for centuries lived from herding and trade.
The rugs were woven by the women, and they are one of the tribe’s hallmarks. Red leads: sometimes almost plain, sometimes crossed by a few broad, dark signs that leave the field room to breathe. It is a sparse, open geometry, closer to painting than to ornament.
Over the years, light fades the red towards coral and peach, and the pile wears down until it is almost flat. In a vintage Rehamna, those traces are part of the design.
